| Regular tuning
| To keep tuning stability on concert pitch at A440 your piano needs to be tuned at least six monthly and definately no longer than yearly
| Regular services and regulation
| Making sure your piano is well serviced and regulated, this procedure should be done every ''five'' to ''seven'' years. This is very 'important' so you don't damage the piano action.
| Be careful of humidity
| Pianos dislike moisture, you should always give much care to your piano in humidity. The piano has many parts that are easily affected by moisture. It may be said that most of the troubles a piano develops can be traced to the effect of moisture. Harmful effect of moisture: When the piano is exposed to moisture, important parts of the piano like the wood, felt and leather parts expand, resulting in troubles such as the following..
| But not that dry....
| Over-dry room is not good for the piano either. To over heat the room and make it extremely dry is an enemy more threatening to the piano than humidity. This is because wooden parts and felt contract and the joints of the sound boards and other bound parts are liable to be disturbed. This condition can cause rattles and buzzes in the piano action mechanism.
Like any living thing, proper temperature and humidity are necessary for the good health of the piano.A broad- leaved plant in the room will be useful in kepping the humidity at a proper level. Proper temperature range for the piano is ( 15-25 oC ( 59-77 F ) And proper humidity range is ( 50-70 RH.)
Avoid sudden change of temperature.Avoid suddenly a cold room. When the air in the room is heated up suddenly, the piano wire and the metal parts sweat. This becomes the cause of rusting. At the same time the felt parts absorb moisture and slow down the action. If flutuations in temperature are marked. the sound board is forced to repeat expansion and contraction, which causes the piano to get out of tune.
| Care of the coating.
| The articles mentioned below are liable to damage the coating if they are placed on the piano.
(1) plastic products (except polyethylene ) including: polyvinyl; chloride coated book covers; electric cords, plastic erasers ( even erasees dust will erode the coating ) and toys.
(2) Vinyl
(3) Articles with alcohol contents, including perfume, insecticide, whisky; etc.
(4) Others, including manicure tinctures; hair lacquer;airzol coating thinner, petroleum products.
| Tuning and maintenance
| The great leveler of pianos is out-of- tuneness. The finest pianos sound little differfent from the poorest when they are out of tune. It is of special importance that a piano on which a child is studying should be in good tune, for at the same time the child's ear is being trained to develop an appreciation of the subtety and beauty of musical sounds.
This process is hindered rather than helped by the dissonance of an out of tune piano. Under normal use in the average home a piano should be tuned a minimum of twice per year, although some experts feel as many as four times to be more suitable. Use and changes in temperature and humidity are the main causes of out-of-tuneness. It can be readily understood, therfore, that no two pianos will become out of tune at exactly the same rate.
Pianos used heavily and kept under widely varying atmospheric conditions as, for example, in a night club, are often tuned every day where high standards of performance are required.
Every few years, depending on the amount of use, a piano may need its action mechanism re- regulated or perhaps revoicing ( the balancing of the tone of each note by adjusting the consistency of the hammer felt )
Here you should be guided by a tuner technician whom you know to be qualified and realiable. If you feel there is a concern with the climate your piano is exposed to a Dampp-Chaser piano climate control system can be installed into the Piano, which will immediately give greater tuning stability.
